Artist Statement
As part of my Brazilian cultural heritage I love poetry and music and have always found it as a source of inspiration for my work. I am mostly drawn to creating something new by reading, reciting a poem or listening to lyrics.
When first applying the paint I am reminded of music being composed in layers in which colours, shapes and words are the equivalent of instruments. If the colours are too strong, or too loud, I bring other layers, or tones, to balance the dynamic of events within the work. This process continues until the painting is complete.
The writing on my paintings comes from my fascination of ‘language as an object’ in which they form a composition of verbal-visual representation. I use a combination of gestural calligraphic marks juxtaposed with mono-printing, stencilling and stamping to depict what I call ‘Poem Painting’.
Flowers, insects and butterflies are present to invite the viewer to retreat into a garden-like space where spiritual charge can be recaptured and experienced.
